Summer may seem like a distant dream but the fashion industry has been gearing up Spring/Summer 2012 for several months and there is some fabulous fashion currently working its way to a retailer near you. But to make room for these hot new trends, some of the old ones simply have to go. We take a look at some of 2011′s trends that didn’t make the cut for the New Year and what they’ve been replaced with.
Fifties fashion
The 1950′s revival has been around for several seasons and not without good reason; the gorgeous silhouette of a Fifties inspired dress worked wonders for a fuller figure, accentuating curves and creating a womanly form. But the look that more recently spun from the Mad Men wardrobe has finally seen its day, to be replaced with a look heavily influenced by the 1920′s. The great news is that this look also complements the curvier lady and flapper style attire makes for great plus size dresses.
Silver
Silver was big news in 2011 and, like most years, was a failsafe option for the winter months when metallics make their annual comeback. As we look towards Spring/Summer 2012, it’s time to step away from the cool shades of silver and heat things up a little with bold golden tones. Taking a distinct Seventies twist, shades of gold adopt a luxe, retro vibe, resulting in a Cleopatra meets Jerry Hall fashion fusion.
Midi skirts
Midi skirts, that is skirts that skim the calf, don’t offer the most flattering length to many women; regardless, the look has dominated trends over the past few months and was often used in conjunction with two other big trends of 2011: colour blocking and pleats. But, just like pleats, the reign of the midi is now over and it’s time to decide which side you’re on as maxi and mini skirts become the new lengths de jour.
Orange
Whether you preferred the summery hues of tangerine or the burnt tones of autumnal leaves, the fickle world of fashion has said au revoir to orange. Having spent much of 2011 riding high on a wave of catwalk and high street popularity, everyone’s new favourite colour is electric yellow. Perfect for spring, so expect a spectrum of yellow as we approach the new season, starting from soft shades of sorbet all the way to bold burst of neon brights.
